Factoid: KC offense

Kansas City has completed over a third of its season, and the offense hasn’t quite clicked in yet. The team is winning, but it isn’t putting up its usual numbers. It’s being carried by the defense.   more »

NFL announces 2023 season opener - Detroit at Kansas City

The NFL announced that the 2023 season will begin with the upstart Detroit Lions playing reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City on Thursday, September 7th at Arrowhead Stadium. Historically, the defendingMore NFL champion has kicked off the season with a Thursday night game, but the primetime spot is new for the Lions. Detroit has never played in the kickoff game since its inception in 2002, and last year they were not scheduled for any primetime games before being flexed into a Sunday night game the final week of the season. The NFL announced on Thursday that a potential AFC Championship Game between the second seeded Buffalo Bills and top seeded Kansas City would take place in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Factoid: Joe Burrow

I like the look of Joe Burrow this week. He’s on top of his game right now, and the opponent looks pretty much ideal. Kansas City has a great offense, but that defense has been pretty leaky all along.  more »

Andy Richardson: Thursday Night Recap

The NFL is back, like it never left. That's not really true; it seems like ages since we had a football game to watch. The thing that struck me the most was how clean everything was. I expected tons of penalties and injuries. Instead it was like any other game.   more »

Factoid: Decline of the kick return

There have been times in recent years when the NFL seemed ready to get rid of the kickoff entirely. There are too many injuries, including concussions, on such plays. At this point, more than 60 percent of returns result in touchbacks -- i.e., nothing happens. What's surprising is that there seems to have been a ripple effect on punt returns.   more »

Fantasy Index Weekly: Championship Preview: Kansas City

Kansas City is favored by 3 points, and rightly so. They had the AFC’s best record, and they’re playing at home, where they’re very tough – only the Chargers, with a fourth-quarter comeback from a 14-point deficit, won at Arrowhead this season. Home teams have won every conference championship game since 2012.   more »

Fantasy Fireworks on Monday Night Football

Hopefully fantasy owners had their Kansas City and Los Angeles players in the lineup for Monday night’s instant classic. The two teams combined for over 1,000 yards, 105 combined points, 10More passing touchdowns, and a 35-point fourth quarter. There were plenty of fantasy points to go around in the record-setting showdown. Less

Factoid: Defense and Special Teams points

A couple of day ago Ian ran an item about special teams touchdowns -- which teams have been best on kick and punt return scores in recent years. A reader wondered how the numbers are different when you add in touchdowns off turnovers and safeties. Those numbers are below.   more »

Factoid: Kansas City Defense

Derek Carr deserves some MVP consideration. He's having a great year, and he's one of the most mistake-free quarterbacks in the league. He's thrown only 5 interceptions and taken just 12 sacks in 12 games.   more »

Factoid: Julius Thomas

The other day I posted a table showing the number of touchdowns allowed by each team to wide receivers since the start of last season. Now the table showing touchdowns to tight ends. Not surprisingly (since we mention it every week), Detroit is terrible in this regard, making Julius Thomas a great option this week.   more »
