The Jets have signed Michael Vick, another high-profile, big-name passer. Will things turn out better than their recent acquisitions along these lines? It seems unlikely.

New York traded for Brett Favre in 2008, releasing Chad Pennington. The Jets started out 8-3, but Favre hurt his arm and struggled down the stretch. Pennington led Miami to the playoffs that year.

The next year they drafted Mark Sanchez, who led the Jets to back to back AFC Championship Games. But he struggled the next season, and New York traded for Tim Tebow. The season-long QB controversy in which Sanchez struggled and Tebow barely played ended badly.

Enter Geno Smith, the team's second-round pick a year ago. Smith had an up and down season; mostly up for opposing fantasy defenses. But he showed some potential, at times. And now he'll be in a competition with a quarterback who will no doubt be a popular choice to move ahead of him when -- sorry, if -- Smith happens to struggle.

Vick, of course, isn't short on talent. Huge 2010 season, with 30 total TDs in 13 games. But he gets hurt most years, and at 34 years old (in June), is even less likely to hold up to the punishment. He showed a willingness to run last year, averaging 61 rushing yards in his first five starts. But he got hurt, then got benched, and became an afterthought.

The Jets say Vick will have the opportunity to compete with Smith. Vick is a former top pick who played in coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's offense for 4 years in Philadelphia. Smith is a second-rounder who entered the league with some question over his ability to handle pressure.

Fantasy-wise, Vick has his usual appeal and risk. He probably starts in Week 1, and throws to Eric Decker and... DeSean Jackson? Also possible. But in Week 5, will he still be there? And will Smith be better for having watched Vick play for a while?

Maybe things turn out great for the Jets, and fantasy teams that toss a pick his way. But I can't help think Vick's season will end like Favre's (or Tebow's), and Smith's Jets career will end like Sanchez's (or Pennington's).
