Fantasy Index Open - Overall results with alternate scoring system

Checking in with a final look at the Fantasy Index Open. With the regular Experts Poll that appeared in the magazine (with the 20 industry writers), we scored it two different ways. We had the standard system, with descending multipliers for each player, and we also had the floor scoring system (where there was no difference between a poor pick and an outright bust). In the floor scoring system, Sam Bradford (0 points) is worth just as much as Carson Palmer (missed half of the season).

In the floor system, suggested by Chris Liss of Rotowire.com, we work under the assumption that through using the waiver wire, fantasy teams in the worst case will score as well as the 20th-best player at QB, TE, K and Def, and the 40th-best player at RB and WR. We move down farther at those positions because twice as many are started in fantasy leagues.

So the baseline-type guys at each position are as follows:

QB: 256.7 points (Derek Carr)
RB: 86.6 points (Darren McFadden)
WR: 110.2 points (Greg Jennings)
TE: 67.7 points (Scott Chandler)
PK: 107 points (Blair Walsh)
ST: 105 points (four teams)

So in floor scoring, entries receive credit for picks only above those stat levels. Suppose, for example, that a kicker scored 137 points and you ranked him 1st. For that pick you would receiver (137 minus 107) = 30 points, then multiply that time 25 points. (30 x 25 = 750 points). If you ranked him 2nd, you’d receive 30 x 24 = 726 points.

Using the floor scoring system, the top 30 gets shuffled. Peter Owers, a college student from West Palm Beach, Fla., moved up from 3rd to 1st to take the title. Zach Leavitt from Highlands Ranch, Colo., moved all the way up from 43rd to take 2nd.

Michael Nease from West Chicago won using standard scoring, but he dropped to 4th in this format.

In the Floor Scoring System, 20 entries moved up by at least 40 spots, lead by Geoff Maleman (131 to 36), Brian Sauber (107 to 20) and Rob Reiber (93 to 24).

Eighteen entries fell by at least 40 spots, including Josh Smith (68 down to last), Todd Voorhees (2 to 88) and Eric Hotz (22 to 90). Voorhees was the runner-up in the standard format.

A little feedback from a long time customer.

Our fantasy pool is entering its 25^th year and I have used multiple books and on-line tools over the years.

I have locked on to Fantasy Index as my go to for the last 5 years and have won the pool 3 of those years and finished no lower than 4^th.

Interesting to see how much more accurate you were at the end of the year compared to other books my competitors used.

And a side note… we've got a re-draft 16-team, 20 players drafted league (drafting water boys by the 17^th round) that I've won 2 years in a row. Nobody's ever done that in 21 years… using your cheat sheet. it's an old school league that used to draft out of piles of magazines.

I wanted to thank you for such an amazing product and your customer service. I ordered the wrong date for my update and called to correct the mistake. Your customer service person was very kind, helpful and took care of the issue immediately.

I have used your product for the past 18 years or so… Every now and then I will be tempted and look at what other magazines have to offer, quickly realizing no one comes close.

In addition to the magazine, I started buying the weekly updates years ago when my dad taught me a lesson. The draft came and dad was sitting in the 12 hole for his pick. He told me he felt very comfortable about who he was going to select but would not tell me who his prized gem was to be. I was doubtful. The pick? Priest Holmes (his first dynamite year). I remember telling my dad, "that is a decent pick but they plan to pull him at the goal line." Ever the teacher, dad explained he had purchased the Fantasy Football Index update and read Holmes would get the goal line carries. "Update?", I asked. That was 2002 and Holmes had 21 rushing TDs and Dad won the title! Lesson learned.

By the way, I have made the title game for the last 5 years in a row. Thanks for the detailed, hard work and an great product!
