My dynasty league held its annual rookie draft over the weekend. This is a league where we can keep our entire roster from year to year, and the only ways to change your team are trades, adding free agents from the waiver wire, and the annual rookie draft, which takes place one week after the actual NFL draft.

We go three rounds, and teams are allowed to select both rookies and available veterans (since the waiver wire is locked from the conclusion of the regular season through the conclusion of the rookie draft). It's a modified PPR league (RBs half a point, WRs a point, TEs a point and a half) with 26-man rosters, so there really aren't a ton of non-rookies available to get excited about. But, you never know.

Here's how the draft went down.

TOP DOG ROOKIE DRAFT - ROUND 1
PickFranchiseSelection
1.01Paper Champs Todd Gurley, STL
1.0227B Stroke 6 Amari Cooper, OAK
1.0327B Stroke 6 Melvin Gordon, SDC
1.04Falcons Kevin White, CHI
1.05Jerry Jones is Not a GM DeVante Parker, MIA
1.06The FootbAbdullahgans Ameer Abdullah, DET
1.07The FootbAbdullahgans Tevin Coleman, ATL
1.08Lobotomized Lepers T.J. Yeldon, JAC
1.09Lobotomized Lepers Nelson Agholor, PHI
1.10Paper Champs Dorial Green-Beckham, TEN
1.11The FootbAbdullahgans Breshad Perriman, BAL
1.12The Fighting Platypi Maxx Williams, BAL

No real surprises in the first round. I can say that because I mocked this thing a week ago and got the first 11 players correct, albeit in a slightly different order here and there. Gurley, Cooper, Gordon and White will be the top 4 picks in the majority of rookie drafts, if not most. This is dynasty, so the fact that Gurley might be brought along slowly as a rookie is minimized. I wouldn't argue with someone opting for Cooper or White at No. 1, given the relative career lengths of star wideouts versus star running backs.

Parker, Agholor and Yeldon will probably be the 5-6-7 picks in most drafts, in some order. Thanks to previous trades, I had the 6, 7 and 11 picks in the draft. I like Abdullah and Coleman a little more than Yeldon, and drafted accordingly, but Yeldon has the clearest path to the starting lineup of the three. At pick 1.11, I was hoping for Agholor first and Green-Beckham next, but not surprisingly they were gone. So I settled on Perriman, who also has No. 1 WR potential. Our TE-friendly scoring system no doubt played a factor in Williams' selection at 1.12.

TOP DOG ROOKIE DRAFT - ROUND 2
PickFranchiseSelection
2.01Knuckleheads David Johnson, ARI
2.02Paper Champs Phillip Dorsett, IND
2.03Falcons Jay Ajayi, MIA
2.04Maniacal Marauders Jameis Winston, TBB
2.05Jerry Jones is Not a GM David Cobb, TEN
2.06Maniacal Marauders Devin Funchess, CAR
2.0727B Stroke 6 Duke Johnson, CLE
2.0827B Stroke 6 Jaelen Strong, HOU
2.09M as in Mancy Marcus Mariota, TEN
2.10The FootbAbdullahgans Sammie Coates, PIT
2.11Jerry Jones is Not a GM Devin Smith, NYJ
2.12The Fighting Platypi Tyler Lockett, SEA

It's after the first round where I suspect no two rookie drafts will be the same. Do you like the mid-round running back in Cleveland, Arizona, or Miami more? Do you have Crowell, Ellington, or Miller already on your roster and want to protect him? Or maybe you like Cobb because of how little Sankey showed last year? I can't argue with the running back selections; all are potential starters or backups, and your confidence in the veterans there is a factor in how you slot them. Ajayi has the most talent, Cobb might be in the best spot to supplant the starter.

The quarterbacks went about where I figured. I would have taken Mariota had he fallen a couple of spots, but it's tough -- I have Rivers, Kaepernick, and Bortles on my roster, so I'd need to move one of them to draft another; don't want to carry 4 QBs even in dynasty, I don't think.

The wide receivers went about where you'd expect. Maybe Smith should go a little higher. I took Coates, because I like his talent and upside, and appreciate how generally Pittsburgh has done a nice job at this position over the years.

TOP DOG ROOKIE DRAFT - ROUND 3
PickFranchiseSelection
3.01Falcons Ryan Williams, DAL
3.02Jerry Jones is Not a GM Josh Hill, NOS
3.03Jerry Jones is Not a GM Kenny Bell, TBB
3.0427B Stroke 6 Tre McBride, TEN
3.05Jerry Jones is Not a GM Darren Waller, BAL
3.06Maniacal Marauders Mike Davis, SFO
3.07Maniacal Marauders Javorious Allen, BAL
3.08The FootbAbdullahgans Clive Walford, OAK
3.09Jerry Jones is Not a GM Chris Conley, KCC
3.10Maniacal Marauders Jeremy Langford, CHI
3.1127B Stroke 6 Duron Carter, IND
3.12The Fighting Platypi Josh Robinson, IND

As noted earlier, unrostered veterans are available, so there go Josh Hill and a potential Cowboys RB starter. I wanted Hill, thought about him at 2.10, and tried to trade up to get him at 3.01, without success. So I stayed at 3.08 and took the 2nd-best rookie tight end in Walford (hopefully).

The third round of this draft is generally the round to take fliers on rookie running backs, but sometimes you pull good players out of this round -- Jarvis Landry last year, Jermichael Finley a few years back, etc. I'll nominate Robinson as a possibility for the round's best pick, since there's opportunity in Indianapolis for whenever Frank Gore's motor finally runs out. Davis in San Francisco and Allen in Baltimore are rookie running backs who might come into value as down the road starters for their potential teams.
