Last night we held our annual Experts Draft which will run in our 2015 Annual. Each year we have the draft and auction in mid- to late May, in order to get the results published in our magazine.

We go 22 rounds to ensure everyone gets enough players to cover retirements, preseason injuries, and bye weeks, because this is a no-transaction league. You draft your team, and then it plays out the year against the teams drafted by all the other experts.

This is a non-PPR league; you only gets points for yards and touchdowns (kickers and defenses get points for field goals, sacks, turnovers, and defensive and return touchdowns). I'm not going to spoil the whole thing; you have to buy the magazine! But I will share a few tidbits.

  • Only one wide receiver in the first round. Had this been a PPR league, you'd probably see more wideouts. Instead there was only one, and one QB, and one TE. Nine running backs came off the board in the first round. By the end of the second round, though, things had evened out. Eight wide receivers and only two running backs went in the second round.

  • Tom Brady a sixth-round pick. The problem with drafting in May, among other things, is that there's a lot of uncertainty about a lot of issues -- starters, suspensions, appeals, whatever. If Brady actually does miss the first four games, that's probably about where he should be drafted. If his appeal is overturned, he'll be a steal.

  • Rookie running backs. The two first-round picks, Melvin Gordon and Todd Gurley, went off the board back-to-back at the end of the third round. I wouldn't be overly surprised if they went higher in non-expert drafts, especially Gordon, who's not coming off a November ACL injury.

  • Rookie receivers. The first one, Amari Cooper, went off the board at the end of the fifth round. A few more went in the seventh, eighth and ninth.

  • Quarterbacks. A couple of early ones, then most top quarterbacks went in the fourth and fifth rounds. For those wondering, Sam Bradford (10th) went two rounds earlier than Nick Foles. Johnny Manziel went in the 17th round. Tim Tebow - not drafted.

  • Dallas running backs. Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden were both fifth-round picks. Ryan Williams went in the 22nd round. Lance Dunbar, not drafted.

On Tuesday, I'll post some notes from the Auction.
