Last week I took part in the annual rookie draft for my experts dynasty league. It's a 12-team league with 22-player rosters, PPR scoring, start 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, and 1 RB-WR-TE flex. I lost in the playoff semifinals a year ago and picked 10th in each of the four rounds. I also had 1.09 due to a trade. Here's how the draft went.

PickSelection
1.01Gurley, Todd STL RB
1.02Gordon, Melvin SDC RB
1.03Cooper, Amari OAK WR
1.04White, Kevin CHI WR
1.05Agholor, Nelson PHI WR
1.06Yeldon, T.J. JAC RB

When I posted my last rookie draft a month ago, it was the top 4 that were pretty much set in stone. Now I think it's the top 6, with people excited about the landing spots of Agholor in Chip Kelly's Eagles offense and Yeldon as a likely lead back in Jacksonville. On both guys I am a little wary of their talent, but early reports on Agholor have been good, and no question the Jags liked Yeldon a lot.

PickSelection
1.07Perriman, Breshad BAL WR
1.08Abdullah, Ameer DET RB
1.09Parker, DeVante MIA WR
1.10Coleman, Tevin ATL RB
1.11Green-Beckham, Dorial TEN WR

Parker and Coleman were my picks. I selected Parker before the report of him undergoing foot surgery last week; ugh. Would have liked to take Abdullah and Perriman in those spots, but didn't have the option.

PickSelection
1.12Ajayi, Jay MIA RB
2.01Dorsett, Phillip IND WR
2.02Johnson, Duke CLE RB
2.03Strong, Jaelen HOU WR
2.04Johnson, David ARI RB
2.05Funchess, Devin CAR WR
2.06Cobb, David TEN RB

I think it's after pick 1.11 where there's not a lot of agreement. I think I'd have Dorsett, Strong, Duke Johnson and either Cobb or Ajayi, in that order. Some of these picks were no doubt influenced by which players teams had on their roster, or hoped to have on their roster. If you happen to have Lamar Miller or Bishop Sankey, you have to have a little more interest in Ajayi and Cobb, I think; same deal with David Johnson if you have Andre Ellington.

PickSelection
2.07Williams, Maxx BAL TE
2.08Allen, Javorius BAL RB
2.09Winston, Jameis TBB QB
2.10Jones, Matt WAS RB

Had Winston been there at 2.10, he'd have been my pick. With him gone, I was considering either Jones or a couple of wideouts -- Devin Smith, Chris Conley, Sammie Coates. But my particular team in this league is stronger at receiver than running back, and there have been some positive reports on Jones, so I thought I'd give him a shot. I have Coates in my other dynasty league, and I'm not so crazy about Smith or Conley (though I do like Conley) that I just had to grab them.

PickSelection
2.11Mariota, Marcus TEN QB
2.12Smith, Devin NYJ WR
3.01Conley, Chris KCC WR
3.02Coates, Sammie PIT WR
3.03Wilson, Marquess CHI WR
3.04Garoppolo, Jimmy NEP QB
3.05Lockett, Tyler SEA WR
3.06Artis-Payne, Cameron CAR RB
3.07Ridley, Stevan NYJ RB
3.08Robinson, Josh IND RB
3.09Rawls, Thomas SEA RB
3.10Montgomery, Ty GBP WR

The next four picks were all players I liked. I did think about taking Mariota, but I'm not a huge fan plus I have Cam Newton and Philip Rivers in this league, so I'm in good shape at the position for the next few years (it seems to me). Unrostered veterans are also fair game in this "rookie" draft, hence the veteran picks (none of which I'd have made myself, but whatever). Josh Robinson is the rookie I'd have taken if he'd been there; he wasn't, so I opted for Ty Montgomery. Why argue with Ted Thompson when it comes to drafting wide receivers? He seems to know what he's doing, even though most likely I'll drop him long before he ever makes an impact.

Brief note about tight ends; in this league I have Gronkowski, Greg Olsen, Josh Hill and Tyler Eifert. So clearly I'm not drafting one, and would like to trade Eifert or maybe one of the others if Hill is as good as Sean Peyton seems to think.

PickSelection
3.11Walford, Clive OAK TE
3.12Smelter, DeAndre SFO WR
4.01Davis, Mike SFO RB
4.02Green, Virgil DEN TE
4.03No Pick Made
4.04Bell, Kenny TBB WR
4.05Crabtree, Michael OAK WR
4.06Langford, Jeremy CHI RB
4.07Zenner, Zach DET RB
4.08Days, Synjyn DAL RB
4.09Hardy, Justin ATL WR
4.10McBride, Tre TEN WR

And that's that. I have Hardy in my other dynasty and had some interest in Zach Zenner and Jeremy Langford. But I opted for McBride, who realistically will be back on the waiver wire in August when I add a kicker and defense for the season.
