Cleveland's backfield was a little tough to predict a year ago. Ben Tate opened as the starter, then Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell led the way at different points. Tate is long gone, but Cleveland used a third-round pick on Duke Johnson, which suggests they have an idea he'll contribute fairly extensively.

The Akron Beacon Journal confirms the belief that Crowell is the favorite to start, but says West will have a chance to earn carries, and Johnson is in for a "prominent role."

Specifically, it says West too often found himself in the doghouse last year, with his preparation questioned. The article actually warns that West needs to do better to risk losing his spot (roster spot?) to Glenn Winston, yet another back.

Johnson, in any case, "poses the best receiving threat" among the group, and seems headed for that role. The team might use him at receiver at times, which could help him secure the best fantasy value behind Crowell.

Crowell will be the favorite to lead the team in rushing and touchdowns, but it's clear his job isn't entirely secure. West or Johnson could eat into his snaps, especially if Crowell struggles with fumbles.

Clearly, it's a backfield with the potential to have one or two solid fantasy performers, as well as a player who disappoints anyone who selects him by finding himself on the bench or with a lesser role. A battle to watch closely throughout the preseason.
