The Bears sign Allen Robinson to a three-year deal worth $42 million. Now let’s see which receiver they get. Robinson missed almost all of last season, and he struggled in 2016.

Back in 2015, of course, Robinson was pretty awesome, catching 80 passes for 1,400 yards and 14 TDs. That he missed almost all of last year with a torn ACL isn’t necessarily a big deal – doctors know how to fix those nowadays.

But I am nervous about how poorly Robinson played in 2016. He averaged over 5 fewer yards per catch, and too often he and Blake Bortles weren’t on the same page. Bortles completed only 49 percent of his passes when throwing for Robinson. In the past two years, 54 other wide receivers have been the intended target on at least 150 passes, and only two of them have caught under 50 percent of their balls.

Some (maybe most) of this blame can be attributed to Bortles. He’s pretty stinky at times, with even the easiest throws an adventure at times. Bortles most recently had some appalling misses in the playoff win over Buffalo.

But I would be nervous about operating under the assumption that Robinson is one of the top dozen wide receivers in the game. He’s good at making contested catches, but he’s not a real speedy guy. Back at the combine in 2014, recall, he clocked an unusually slow 4.60.

Chicago has some other wide receivers. Cameron Meredith would have been their No. 1 option last year but he got hurt in the preseason. They drafted Kevin White with a top-10 pick, and they haven’t given up on him yet. But Robinson should be their main option.
