Factoid: Tampa Bay D

There's a lot of interest in Tampa Bay's offense. It had a lot of top performers last year, and now it goes from mistake-prone Jameis Winston operating it to Tom Brady. (We can debate whether safer equates to more productive.) But I think their defense could also be a viable target.   more »

Around the NFL: Maxx Crosby

In the 2019 NFL Draft, the Raiders raised some eyebrows when they drafted defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell with the No. 4 overall pick. Thus far, the skeptics look right: Ferrell started all season, at least, but had a modest 4.5 sacks. Oakland made out much better with fourth-rounder Maxx Crosby.   more »

Around the NFL: 49ers Defense

Story yesterday that San Francisco pass rusher Dee Ford underwent offseason knee surgery. He missed 5 games the second half of last season and wasn't fully healthy in some of the ones he played in. There's a noticeable difference.   more »

Factoid: Defensive touchdowns

In typical fantasy leagues, people generally don't choose defenses based on scoring touchdowns. There's some luck involved in those scores, and not a huge amount of variance. The NFL average is under 3 such touchdowns per season, so the difference between above- and below-average is small.   more »

Factoid: Washington Defense

Sometimes people get caught up in what the media pays the most attention to with teams -- quarterbacks, front office drama, coaching missteps. Focus on that stuff and you might think Washington's football team is a disaster. But their defense might be surprisingly good this year, especially in fantasy terms.   more »

Factoid: Top 5 Defenses, one year later

The New England Patriots defense helped win fantasy leagues a year ago, and that memory will no doubt help them get selected very early at the position again this year. Tread carefully.   more »

Factoid: Saints Defense

The New Orleans Saints won't be one of the first defenses selected in early fantasy drafts. ADP data shows them being drafted outside the top dozen in sack and takeaway-based systems. People tend to focus on their offense, which looks like an oversight.   more »

Andy Richardson: Forced Fumbles

Bears GM Ryan Pace hasn't covered himself in glory this offseason. Neither the trade for Nick Foles nor the sizable contract given Jimmy Graham have drawn much support. Those moves take some attention away from another questionable deal: 5 years and $70 million for much-traveled pass rusher Robert Quinn.   more »

Andy Richardson: Wins and fantasy defenses

Picking a fantasy defense is hard. Teams fall off from the previous season all the time; Chicago a year ago and Jacksonville the year before that. A pretty good rule of thumb, though, is to focus on team wins when selecting one.   more »

Around the NFL: Broncos Defense

The Broncos Defense was one of 2019's bigger fantasy disappointments. It was a bottom-10 group (1 point for sacks, 2 for takeaways) after ranking in the top 10 in three of the previous four years. And it might be further weakened in 2020.   more »

Factoid: Steelers Defense

It was a disappointing season for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but no one should be blaming their defense. Especially in fantasy realms, where it did something that's seldom achieved in the NFL.   more »

Factoid: San Francisco Defense

One year after going 4-12, San Francisco went 13-3 and made it to the Super Bowl (ultimately coming up short). Offensive improvement (from 16th in scoring to 4th) and keeping quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo healthy was part of it, but the 49ers defense was the biggest reason for the turnaround.   more »

Factoid: Wade Phillips

The Rams found a scapegoat for their slide from NFC Champion a year ago to out of the playoffs this year. It's Wade Phillips, for some reason, even though his defense was the one thing that went right in last year's Super Bowl loss. Phillips should land a new job before much longer.   more »

Factoid: Patriots Defense

After yet another dominant performance (and fantasy-winning week in many leagues), the Patriots Defense is proving to be the best late-round pick you could possibly have made. They're racking up sack and interception totals that might wind up being the best ever.   more »

Around the NFL: Clowney to Seahawks

The way Houston is running its offseason, it almost looks like they don't have a General Manager. Oh wait, they don't. They've now traded away Jadeveon Clowney for a pair of backup linebackers and a future third-round pick. Had they made this trade back before July 15, they'd likely have got a lot more.   more »
