Looks like extra points will be changed next week. It will be voted on, and there are three proposals. One by the Patriots, one by the Eagles, and one by the competition committee.

New England recommends moving the extra points to the 15-yard-line. If teams want to go for 2 points, they take it from the 2-yard line.

Philadelphia recommends moving extra points to the 15. But if teams want to go for 2 points, they move it to the 1. Furthermore, if there’s a turnover on the 2-point conversion attempt, the defense can take it back to the opposing end zone for 2 points.

The league proposal is the same as the Eagles, only with the 2-point tries coming from the 2.

The Eagles proposal is the most radical, because it not only lowers the probability of converting the PAT but simultaneously makes the payoff higher for a successful 2-point try. Under the Philadelphia plan, more coaches would simply skip PAT attempts pretty much every time.

My complaint with all three plans is that moving kicks back to the 15 isn’t severe enough. At that range, the PAT is still almost automatic.

For the 2014 season, teams converted 95 percent on field goals of 30-35 yards. They went a combined 155 out of 163.

It would make more sense, I think, to move them back another 5-10 yards, dropping them down to the 80-85 percent rate. For the 2014 season, teams went 117 of 139 on field goals of 36-39 yards.
