The Broncos are Super Bowl champs, which brings every move they make or don't make under extra scrutiny. For that reason, there's plenty of discussion about what they will or won't do at the quarterback position.

For now, the team is waiting on Peyton Manning's retirement decision. Most believe he'll hang 'em up, but it's not certain. If he wants to continue playing, somebody (if not the Broncos) will certainly pay him to play for them in 2016.

But the team needs to figure out what to do with backup Brock Osweiler, who's headed into free agency. If Manning does retire, the Broncos will need Osweiler to start for them. Ronnie Hillman, for what little its worth (he's no lock to be back with the team either) says letting Osweiler go in free agency wouldn't be too smart.

Should the Broncos really franchise Osweiler at the huge sum for franchise quarterbacks, or commit to a long-term deal for him? Osweiler won some games as Denver's starting quarterback, but he showed little evidence that he's the long-term answer at quarterback. Manning after all won three games in the playoffs while doing essentially nothing.

Osweiler didn't do much to show he's a franchise guy. In terms of quarterback rating, for example, he put up a lowly 86.4 rating. Among quarterbacks with at least 50 pass attempts last season, that ranked 27th in the league; 25th among regular starting quarterbacks. Better than Joe Flacco and Peyton Manning, true, but not good.

Denver will likely have to commit to Osweiler at some point -- they probably don't want to enter next season with a brand-new quarterback -- but should be careful about investing too heavily in him. He's yet to prove he's worth it.
