Doug Martin had a strong season for the Bucs, so much so that the initial belief was that the team would work hard to keep him around. But Martin returning is far from certain, since he appears likely to hit the open market. Once that happens, it will be hard for Tampa Bay to retain him.

This article in the Tampa Bay Times believes Martin is looking to "hit the jackpot" after his big contract-year season, and that the two sides aren't close to an agreement. Time and again we see players get to free agency, and get an offer their previous team is unwilling to meet. If Martin gets to free agency, that's the likeliest result.

If they lose Martin, arguably the most intriguing free agent back, the Bucs will have other options. Lamar Miller, Chris Ivory. There will be other names available. Matt Forte might be a short-term consideration.

The Bucs could consider making Charles Sims their lead back, but we were thinking that a year ago, and it didn't really happen for him. But he'd probably get a shot if Martin walks and the Bucs miss out on other top options.

Keeping Martin around is probably the safest option. If the price is right. Gotta be worrying to the team that Martin struggled for two seasons until he was playing for a new contract.

Don't be surprised if Martin walks.
