Lions open to trading third overall pick

Detroit Lions GM Bob Quinn said recently that the team is open to trading the third overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, adding that he has talked with teams asMore recently as last week and as long ago as the February Scouting Combine. While the Lions are listening to offers, Quinn did say that any potential offer would need to make sense. Some might consider that a new draft strategy for the Lions. Less

2020 NFL Draft to be fully virtual

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed all 32 NFL clubs earlier this week that the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft will proceed in a fully virtual format. League and team facilities are closedMore indefinitely, meaning that teams will need to conduct the draft outside of their facilities. Teams were advised to be in separate locations, using phone and the internet to communicate. The draft, originally scheduled to be held in Las Vegas, runs from April 23-25. Less

Factoid: Is Tua really No. 2?

Joe Burrow had a record-setting season for Louisiana State, winning the Heisman and the National Championship. He's widely expected to be the top pick in the NFL Draft, with a report yesterday that the Dolphins may be hoping to trade up. But a Plan B of Tua Tagovailoa looks pretty good too.   more »

Around the NFL: Justin Jefferson

It looks like a great draft class of wide receivers. NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah grades a ridiculous 27 of them as worthy of being drafted in the first three rounds, while Pro Football Focus ranks 10 among its top 40 players. For some perspective, note that a year ago only three were drafted in the top 50.   more »

Around the NFL: Jonathan Taylor

The running backs ran the 40 at the combine yesterday, an occurrence that always gets people excited for the upcoming draft. Speed isn't everything, as we're reminded every year when some fast rookie flops, but all things being equal faster is better than slower. Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor, arguably the top back in the class, turned in the fastest 40 among running backs, with a 4.39.   more »

Around the NFL: The Fabulous Gruden Boys

It's one of the best nights of the year, and the fortunate end to all the speculation about who likes which players. In the last few days such talk has reached a fever pitch, and two teams -- Washington and Oakland -- are the focus of lots of rumors.   more »

Raiders planning surprise draft pick?

The Oakland Raiders sent home their scouting department in advance of the upcoming NFL Draft for fear of leaks. Given the move, there is some speculation that the Raiders are planningMore a surprise maneuver on Thursday during the first round of the draft. The Raiders hold the fourth overall pick. Things that make you go hmmm. Less

Andy Richardson: Snap reactions to Round 1

Round 1 of the NFL Draft is in the books. There were some surprises, although maybe not as many as you'd expect. All the teams most believed to be interested in drafting a quarterback, for example, actually drafted a quarterback. Plenty more draft to go, but here are some quick takes on the first-rounders of most interest in fantasy leagues, in order.   more »

Andy Richardson: Skill-position mock draft

"Skill-position" can seem rather unfair. Playing cornerback isn't a skill? But for most fantasy leagues, and in the eyes of most of the media, what the vast majority of the people care about is where the quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends will end up. Here's my stab at where the biggest names at those positions will land.   more »

Around the NFL: Sony Michel

Just before the NFL Draft in many years, reports will come out about such and such talented player slipping due to medical concerns. Sometimes the reports are likely true, and sometimes they might be circulated by unscrupulous agents or teams in order to get their guy drafted higher (or the slipping player available later). There's one out about Georgia running back Sony Michel.   more »

Factoid: First-round quarterbacks

Over the weekend, Jets coach Todd Bowles said he wouldn't hesitate to start a rookie quarterback, even though the team already has Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater. "At the end of training camp, if you’re a rookie and you are where we need you to be, you play," said Bowles. Few teams actually say this, but that's generally how it's played out in recent years.   more »

Andy Richardson: First quarterback the best quarterback?

I'm on record thinking quarterbacks will go 1-2-3 in the draft; very confident at least three will go win the top 5 picks. Recent draft chatter has the Browns favoring Sam Darnold at No. 1 overall, and the Jets are surely taking one at No. 3; maybe the Giants (or some team they trade with) at No. 2. The question is, which one will turn out best?   more »

Around the NFL: Struggling Joe Flacco

The draft is approaching, and as always a large percentage of the league's teams are possibilities to select one of the draft's top quarterbacks. Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun thinks the Ravens will be one possibility, perhaps looking to develop somebody who can ultimately take over for Joe Flacco.   more »

Factoid: Deshaun Watson

Deshaun Watson comes off a national championship, and he put up huge numbers his final two seasons at Clemson. But he also threw 30 interceptions in those years, including 17 in 2016. The kind of thing that might give Houston pause before hurrying him into the lineup.   more »
