Around the NFL: Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons blew the Super Bowl, and it's tough for Super Bowl losers to return to the big game -- hasn't happened in more than 20 years, in fact. But Atlanta certainly seems to be set up for a few more years of excellence, and mostly it's because of how they've killed it the NFL Draft.   more »

Factoid: First-round quarterbacks

The Bears say Mike Glennon is their starting quarterback, and Andy Reid says the same about Alex Smith. Less plausibly, Houston says Tom Savage will start ahead of rookie Deshaun Watson (left). Recent history suggests that all three of the first-round quarterbacks play plenty in their rookie season -- and it's a bad sign for their NFL futures if they don't.   more »

Around the NFL: Evan Engram

The Giants selected Evan Engram in the first round, making him the second tight end drafted (right after O.J. Howard, ahead of David Njoku). Engram weighs 234 pounds, so he seems more like a big wide receiver than a guy who can line up as a traditional, in-line tight end. But offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan disagrees.   more »

Andy Richardson: Rookie draft recap

My main dynasty league had its annual rookie draft over the weekend. It's arguably the best part of the league; it's up there, anyway. Sort of Christmas morning for dynasty leagues, unwrapping the presents you'll enjoy for years to come (or stick behind the couch or put out on the curb a month or two down the road).   more »

Factoid: Skill positions in top 10

Quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends. Those players were in abundance early in last weekend's NFL draft. In the top 10 picks, in fact, there were as many or more of those players taken than in any of the last 30 years. In most cases, many more.   more »

Andy Richardson: Mocking the rookie dynasty draft

My dynasty league rookie draft commences on Friday. It's a 12-team league with PPR scoring, and tight ends get 1.5 points per reception. Each year, on the weekend after the completion of the NFL Draft, we have a three-round draft to select incoming rookies. Here's how I think the draft will go down.   more »

Around the NFL: Mitch Trubisky

Franchise quarterback or organization-wrecking blunder? With the picks the Bears surrendered to move up one spot to grab Mitch Trubisky, there really is no middle ground. Either he'll be the quarterback the team has long sought, or he'll be the mistake that spells the end of the Ryan Pace-John Fox era.   more »

Around the NFL: Green Bay Packers

The Packers lost Eddie Lacy in free agency. At running back their roster had only converted wideout Ty Montgomery and journeyman (that's what he is right now) Christine Michael. But they gave themselves some other options on day three of the NFL Draft.   more »

Factoid: Top-5 running backs

The Jaguars selected LSU's Leonard Fournette at No. 4 overall last night, and most likely they'll make him their featured ballcarrier right away. Teams don't select running backs that early to groom them behind a veteran.   more »

Around the NFL: Myles Garrett

Myles Garrett will probably be the No. 1 overall pick in tomorrow's draft, maybe the guy who will help turn around the long-suffering Cleveland Browns franchise. Supposedly some in the Browns front office want the pick to be a quarterback, but that would be a surprise.   more »

Andy Richardson: Draft lies

The NFL Draft is three days away, and everyone and his brother is putting out a mock of what they think will happen. And everyone in the media (to use the term loosely) is reporting what teams are thinking about doing or not doing when their first-round pick comes up. A lot of it sounds like an effort to distract people from they're actually planning on doing.   more »

Around the NFL: Scouts weigh in on draft's top prospects

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel annually runs a series on the top college prospects at each position. He polls a dozen or so NFL scouts and executives and has them rank the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers. It's an interesting glimpse into how the players might go in next weekend's draft (which starts Thursday night).   more »

Factoid: O.J. Howard

O.J. Howard is the consensus top tight end in this year's draft, a status enforced when he ran a 4.51 at the combine -- crazy fast for a tight end that weighs 251 pounds. But he was never a huge part of the passing game at Alabama, never catching more than 45 passes or 3 TDs in his four seasons. Should teams be concerned?  more »

Factoid: Second-round quarterbacks

A few days ago I posted the list of quarterback drafted in the second half of the first round over the last 20 years. Very few success stories: Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco are pretty much the entire list of hits, with Chad Pennington and Jason Campbell the other semi-successes out of 17 players. Thought I'd see if quarterbacks who slip the second round fare any better.   more »

Factoid: Swinging and missing at quarterback

Everyone agrees you have to have a quarterback to win in the NFL, so there will be plenty selected in the early rounds of this year's NFL Draft. Unfortunately, more dart throws don't always produce viable quarterbacks, as the 21st century is proving.   more »
