Ian Allan answers your fantasy football questions. In this edition. What do Cam Newton and John Belushi have in common? And what should we expect out of Chip Kelly in San Francisco?

Question 1

In the ‘80s, when ESPN was just starting out, they would televise anything they could get. Australian Rules Football, USFL, even sumo wrestling. I can't help but ask, and I love Cam Newton as a fun and exciting player, but doesn't his cadence remind you of a sumo wrestling match official? It's musical, and like no one else's. Or maybe it's like John Belushi doing one of his samurai bits. Distinct. Agree?

JOHN MACHO (Elko New Mrkt, MN)

That’s a really good observation. I like the Belushi comparison. Newton’s calls at the line are distinctive. He seems to bark them out a little louder than the other guys. Maybe because he’s the only quarterback (I think) who plays without a mouth guard. That might give him a little more ability to shout them out. More notably, he seems to make a big effort to “hold notes”, so to speak, trying to cause people to jump. He seems to get more of those flags than other quarterbacks. NFL Films put a mic on him for the Washington game, and there’s a play in there where it’s very much on display. “My cadence game is ridiculous,” he brags to a teammate on the sideline. He was not as loud or decisive at his Super Bowl press conference.

Question 2

What do you think the 49ers offense will look like under Chip Kelly? Is Kaepernick on his way out due to his high cap numbers and will Carlos Hyde be a good fit in Kelly's system?

Andrew Paterson (Ferndale, WA)

Kaepernick, I think, is gone. He wants out, and I don’t think the 49ers will want to keep him around as a $14 million project. I think they’ll draft somebody, and they’ve also got Blaine Gabbert. I think that’s their one-two punch (and probably both will start in 2016). Gabbert played surprisingly well last year. He didn’t pan out for Jacksonville, but he’s been working on his game. I think he’s probably one of the league’s top 50 quarterbacks right now. While he doesn’t move like Kaepernick, he’s got pretty good mobility, and that’s a plus in Chip Kelly’s offense (with the way they like to work in the zone-read looks). I’m not saying Gabbert is a guy anybody should be planning to select in a fantasy draft right now, but I think he could be part of their quarterbacking situation in 2016. I like Hyde. He’s a big, talented back. He showed that in Week 1. He was a much better back than Adrian Peterson on that night. And Kelly has shown some ability to put together good running games – not so much last year, but definitely in 2013 and 2014. Part of the problems last year could be traced to opponents getting smarter about defending against Kelly’s system, but they were also hamstrung by using Sam Bradford at quarterback. He can’t move, and that took away the zone-read dimension. With Gabbert (and presumably with whatever quarterback they might use) the zone-read stuff should be back in the playbook. It’s early, but I expect Hyde will be one of the top 8-10 running backs on my board this year.
